Announce your presence when stepping into dorm room halls. Feel free to announce using your name, gender, or just “staff”. For example: Susie would announce “Woman on the floor”. Bob would announce “Man on the floor” before entering the 5th floor hallways.
Knock on student doors, announce who you are, wait for the student to open the door, and ask if you can enter before doing so. You may also want to ask if a student is decently dressed before they open the door or stepping in.
Keep room doors open while you are in a room with a student. Every dorm room should have a wood block for this purpose. Do not use the locking mechanism on the door to keep it from shutting.
Bathrooms:
When checking in on students who are showering or working through evening routines it is best to announce yourself, and stand at the frame of the door to work with the student.
If you need to walk into the restroom for any reason, it is best to check that everyone in the restroom is at a place for staff to walk in, and also announce that “Staff walking in” before doing so.
If students are in the shower area, stay in the general portion of the restroom. Do not physically assist students in the shower without prior approval from the Education and Training Director unless it is a first aid emergency.
Showers:
Sixth floor lobby showers can flood. Ensure that both shower liners are not over hanging outside of the shower stalls.
Sixth floor dorm restroom shower has a wheelchair accessible stall. This
Fifth floor dorm restrooms have a shower stall on the south side and a tub on the north.
All bathrooms should be checked that they are in good order and have no belongings at the end of each night.
Laundry:
There are a Washer & dryer in the following areas:
- sixth floor dorm restroom
- Fifth floor lobby
- Fifth floor dorm restroom *Second floor kitchen
- Basement in the men’s restroom
Use corresponding program soap while doing laundry.
First Aid Kits:
• 6th floor has first aid kit in 602, in back bedroom, top shelf of middle closet.
• 2nd Floor Kitchens have a first aid kit on the shelf behind the door when you first walk in.
Crucial Conversations & Situations:
If something comes up that, you need to have a conversation with a student about but feel like it requires another staff, call another staff on the phone or request another to join you if one is available. If something happens such as a student answering their door in no clothes, communicate as soon as possible that this occurred to the supervisory staff so that someone is aware to avoid potential misunderstandings.
If you feel there is a need to enter into a student’s room without their permission, call the Education and Training Director, and do not enter without approval.
Overnight: Expectations:
you walk the sixth and fifth floor once every half hour starting at 22:30 and ending at 06:00,
Overnight staff are to be situated at the RA desk located at the north end of the fifth-floor lobby unless making rounds or completing other assigned tasks.
Take note of any activity i.e. a student is up walking around, student going to the restroom, hearing noise coming from a student’s room,
Address situation and Report to supervisor if student or students:
